THE LAND OF THE FEAR OF MEN is a land of affections. It is a land unhindered by geography. It is a land that our heart either seeks out or flees from. It is a land where Faith does not dwell. The Fear of Men is rarely a fear that is frightening; a fear that causes us to run from men. On the contrary, this strange fear seems to motivate us towards men. It is a type of revering fear where the affections of our heart seek their satisfaction in the approval of others. This is a toilsome, unfruitful land.

Yet, there is a kind of revering fear that should be the affection of our heart: “Behold, the fear of the LORD, that is wisdom, and to turn away from evil is understanding” (Job 28:28).

We all live in or near The Land of the Fear of Men, and yet we rarely discern its dangers according to their peril. Her promises are actually fetters, though they appear to be benevolent. We must discern the fear of men for the enslaving affection that it is or we will find ourselves putting on its fetters, thinking we are adding to our armor. Not so. There is no armor in The Land of the Fear of Men, there are only chains.

So friend, turn not down her paths looking for camaraderie, for all are slaves or sunk in graves in The Land of the Fear of Men. You will find, however, the satisfaction that you seek in this life flowing from the hand of your Maker. His narrow paths are sure, true, and abundantly fruitful! Your greatest pleasures in all things pleasurable will be enjoyed when your affections are stayed on the fear of the Lord, not the fear of men.

“O fear the LORD, you His saints; For to those who fear Him there is no want” (Psalm 34:9).
